An introduction to computer concepts, applications, and information systems. Topics include the use of software, such as spreadsheet, database management, graphics, word processing and computer communications via the Internet. Students develop beginning level skills with common applications in order to use a computer as a tool, make informed decisions concerning computer generated information, and obtain basic information systems concepts and terminology to provide a basis for future learning in the field. Students will have substantial hands-on time in both dedicated classrooms/labs and open lab environments. This is a general computer literacy course.

 

Learning outcomes: 

 

1.      Learn how to use Internet Explored to do research.  (Easy and Fun)

2.      Use Microsoft Word to create documents. (Easy and Fun)

3.      Excel to create spread sheets. (Useful - Medium Difficulty)

4.      Work with Access to create data base programs. (Useful - Difficult)

5.      Use Power Point to create a slide show. (Lots of Fun)

6.      Learn Basic Computer concepts (Spread throughout the course)

Instructor’s note:  This is a great, fun course that will introduce you to several essential pieces of software that will be useful throughout your CCAC and work experience – whatever your major. We will be doing a lot of “hands on” work in class.

  1:        Introduction to the course and expectations. Basic computer terminology. Basic                               “buzzwords", e.g. RAM, byte, kilo, mega, hardware, etc.     

  1:        Files and folders. More basic computer terminology. Control Panel issues.

  1:       The Internet: Getting email accounts, searching (binary logic), downloading images.

  2:       Word Processing: A fundamental tool for paper writing.
